Faculty Technology Resource portal:
The 2009-2010 academic year
in the Faculty was fraught with many challenges, and for faculty, staff and
students technology is becoming an increasingly critical area in need of
attention. Last year, in response to these challenges, Dean Charlotte Yates
established a committee to assess the technology needs across the Faculty, with
representation from each of our various departments and units. In attempt
to address some of the primary concerns and questions raised, "The
FSS Technology Resource Portal" was developed to initially address
the first stages of communication and information distribution of the existing
technology support infrastructure currently in place for the Social Sciences
and the larger institution as a whole.
It is located here:
http://www.socialsciences.mcmaster.ca/fss-technology-resources-portal
The primary purpose of this site (a work in progress), is to gather the various
disparate central and non-central technology contacts on campus and within the
Faculty, into an organized central website directory for Faculty support.
This site should potentially grow in scale and scope as we refine it's use and
as more specific support information becomes available, but it's a good
starting spot for anyone seeking help on anything technology related starting
from square one.
On behalf of the committee and the Dean, I encourage you to make suggestions or
additions by sending any feedback to this email: fssweb@mcmaster.ca with the subject line
"FSS Technology Resource Portal"
or
including feedback about this site amongst our general web pages by taking this
public survey about our web spaces (this survey found on the Social Sciences
Home page):

Please feel free to distribute this resource amongst your colleagues in the
Social Sciences, be them faculty, staff, teaching assistants or whomever may
find the resources and site of use. This site will hopefully also have a
technology news section for technology related news and updates from central IT
(UTS) and CLL (avenue to learn) on the many developments that should soon be
well underway from UTS, under the direction of our new CIO, John Kearney.
I also hope to include an area on our very own Public Economics Data Analysis
Laboratory (PEDAL) as they may also expanding and extending their expertise and
technology services for research related computing support in the
Faculty. More news to come, but in the meantime I wish you all good
fortune with the beginning of term, and welcome any and all feedback on this
project, support or questions about our websites and content management system,
and any and all technology in teaching and learning inquiries.
