M.A. Degree Requirements
Students have the option of fulfilling the degree requirements by course work with comprehensive exams or coursework and a thesis:
Course Work With Comprehensive Examinations
In this option students take six half courses (or their equivalent) and write comprehensive examinations. Three half courses are taken during the fall term and three in the winter term. In July, students write comprehensive examinations in one major (2 subfields) and one minor area (1 subfield).

Political Theory
- Classical Political Thought
- The Basis of Modern Political Thought
- Developments in Liberal-Democratic Theory
- Social and Critical Thought
Public Policy
- Theories and Approaches
- Public Policy Studies: Comparative Public Policy
- Public Policy Studies: Canadian
- Administration, implementation and Institutions
Minor areas:
Canadian Politics, Comparative Politics, International Relations, Political Theory, and Public Policy.
Course Work and Thesis
Students pursuing this option take five half courses (or their equivalent) during the first academic year and write a thesis, which must demonstrate independent research skills. Students who wish to write a thesis must submit a thesis proposal for departmental approval by December.
