Welcome!
Welcome to the School of Labour Studies and to the Work and Society Master’s Program. These innovative interdisciplinary programs are the premier undergraduate and graduate Labour Studies programs in Canada and are widely recognized around the world. Working closely with labour organizations (particularly the Hamilton and District Labour Council) and with Mohawk College, we offer an outstanding Certificate Program for adults in Hamilton and nearby communities. In partnership with the Canadian Auto Workers, we provide a unique CAW-McMaster Certificate Program. CAW members in their own local communities take these courses using computers, video-conferences, the Internet, CD ROMs, and face-to-face learning.
Our students enjoy learning in a cooperative, intellectually engaging environment. Our students appreciate learning about the many dimensions of work, including the many forms of `precarious work’ that students themselves increasingly experience. In exploring these areas, our students are also challenged to examine the gendered and racialized aspects of work and society.
Our students enjoy a high rate of success in launching careers such as policy analysis, labour law, community development, labour research, labour organizing, occupational health and safety, human resource management, teaching, international development and other careers related to Labour Studies and to the Social Sciences more generally.
Noted for their commitment to outstanding teaching, our faculty are also at the forefront of research on critical labour issues in Canada and around the world. Our staff are committed to providing a welcoming milieu as well as to superbly administering our innovative, multifaceted programs.
